The invisible enemy of technical cleanliness

The belief that dirt or debris is not a major issue when it comes to technical cleanliness is, in truth, fiction.

Dirt and Debris should be a major concern for any one responsible for customer complaints, managing brand image through to product re-call, re-work or complete write-off.

Contamination from whatever source is a major distractor, but dirt and debris is all too commonly over looked.

Why do major manufacturers invest in removing contamination at entrance points - both indoor and outdoor?

The reason is simple!  80% of contamination is carried in by dirt or debris on tyre wheels and shoes.  Sadly, whilst still vitally important, time and time again many manufacturers concentrate on just the 20% such as clothing fibers etc.

So, what is the true impact of ignoring that 80%?

Dirt and debris, small they may be, can cause significant physical and finance damage. A few examples:

Auto manufacturing

Paint Shop – what is the cost of re-work if dirt/debris enters the production line? How many re-works can you do before the component written off? What then? The cost hits the bottom line.
Engine Plant –Component's have narrow tolerances, high-precision fits and small microscopic openings. Tiny particle residues (i.e. dirt and debris) in injectors, pumps and control units can cause malfunctions with profound consequences up to and including failure of the entire fuel-injection system.
Assembly line – any contamination in any individual part, made in-house or from suppliers, disrupts the production line, again affecting the bottom line and impacting ISO/VDA audits..

Drink manufacturing

Product – Any owner of any brand, small or global, wants the end product to be perfect. Dust is not an option on packaging, certainly not in the digital age.

What are the solutions?

There are many solutions out there that will claim to reduce contamination from dirt and debris and no doubt work well as they are used by major brands. However, ProfilGate is the only matting system that literally traps the dirt and debris almost 100% eliminating contamination at source.

One of our clients in the Manufacturing industry traps 23kg of dirt and debris a week, every week. How much dirt and debris do you think is coming into your facility that you don’t know about?
