Yesterday saw the tolls on both Severn Crossings cut for the first time since 1966.  

Whilst welcome news to businesses from both sides of the water, calls are being made for them to be scrapped immediately rather than at the end of the year.

The initial price cut comes after the ownership of the bridge went into public ownership at midnight on Sunday 7th January 2018 and the removal of VAT charged by the UK government.

Until now, Severn River Crossing PLC have been earning £8m and £10m a month through toll fees. According to Welsh Government, removal of the fees would benefit the Welsh economy around £100m per year, encouraging higher tourist numbers as a result. Seeing Wales being free to enter would, according to Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns, create “exciting opportunities for businesses and investors looking to make their mark in Wales”.
